Apply effects to a clip, a track or the video

One ordered effects list, on any clip, any track, or the finished video. 34 picture and sound effects, each with parameters in real units.

API SDK

Effects used to be separate fields on a clip: one for colour, one for blur, one for a chroma key, one for a named filter. Their order was whatever the compiler decided, and a track or a whole video could not carry any of them.

There is one list now, and it runs in the order you write it.

"effects": [
{ "type": "chromaKey", "color": "#00FF00", "similarity": 0.3 },
{ "type": "color", "saturation": 1.2 },
{ "type": "vignette" }
]

The same list sits on a track, where it covers every clip on it, and on the timeline, where it covers the finished video. One grade for a whole edit is one entry in one place.

  • 34 effects across colour and looks, stylise, layers and masking, sound, and a sound visualiser that draws the final mix.
  • Each takes real units: radius in pixels, cutoff in hertz, threshold in decibels.
  • Every entry takes start and length, in seconds or a percent, so an effect can run for part of a clip.
  • Numeric parameters take keyframes.

An effect that changes the picture is refused on a clip that has none, and one that changes the sound is refused on a silent clip, so a mistake comes back as a 400 instead of a render that quietly ignores it.

Every effect is rendered before and after on the effects reference. Older timelines keep working: the fields the list replaced are read and upgraded.

Numeric parameters take keyframes, so an effect can move while it runs.
